Southern
Broken-dash, |
Male |
Size: Wingspan is 1 to 1 1/4 inches. Similar Species: Northern Broken-Dash, Black Dash and Little Glassywing Habitat: Moist woodland edges, moist powerline cuts, damp places and savannas. Abundance: Common in the tidewater areas and less common in the eastern piedmont. Flight Period: First brood mid May to mid June. Second brood mid July thru September. Comments: This skipper is easly to find and usually very easy to approach. The photo above shows the reddish brown that separates it from the Northern Broken-dash. I also find the head to be a bit more golden than the Northern Broken-dash as well. I found these skippers in my garden in August 1999. They really like my verbena.
