Northern Cloudywing,
Thorybes pylades

 

Size: Wingspan is 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches.

Similar Species: Southern Cloudywing, Confused Cloudywing

Habitat: Open woodland edges, powerline cuts and dirt roads.

Abundance: Fairly common in piedmont and sandhills uncommon elsewhere in North Carolina.

Flight Period: First brood April until mid June. Second brood mid July until mid August.

Comments: This Northern Cloudywing was found along my gravel road in Orange Co. North Carolina in April thru May. Once in a while I`d find it nectaring my garden.
