Gray-green Clubtail, Arigomphus pallidus,

Size: 2.3 inches.

Habitat: Ponds, lakes, streams and swamps. Found in southeastern North Carolina southward to Florida.

Flight Period: April - October in the Carolinas.

Similar Species: Unicorn Clubtail in the northern US although the species shouldn`t overlap.

Comments: This clubtail I first found in May of 2000 in Francis Marion National Forest and thought it was a Unicorn Clubtail which would have been a new South Carolina record. I returned on April 29, 2001 and met Bob Barber of New Jersey and we caught both a male and a female and examined their sex organs to get a correct ID of Gray-green Clubtail. These photos look a bit different that those in Dr. Sidney Dunkle`s book "Dragonflies Through Binoculars"

I watched one of these guys closely as it perched near the ground. It just eased up and grabbed a damselfly easily as I watched.
