Common Sanddragon,
Progomphus obscurus

Size: 2 inches.

Habitat: Streams and rivers with sand bottoms. Also along sandy or gravel roads and weedy fields away from water.

Flight Period: May - September

Similar Species: None in the Carolinas

Comments: See the yellow cerci (at the rear end of the abdomen) that is a give away on this species in North Carolina. The top photo I took in the Caswell Gamelands in Caswell County, NC on May 27, 2001. The photo at right I took in the Caswell Gamelands in Caswell County, NC on May 31, 2001.

These little clubtails are hard to approach. You can find them about anywhere near sandy bottom streams in fields, along dirt roads and woodland edges.
