Cocoa Clubtail,
Gomphus hybridus

Size: 2 inches.

Habitat: Rivers with sandy or silt bottoms. Found in southeastern North Carolina and further south.

Flight Period: April - June

Similar Species: Cobra Clubtail

Comments: These clubtails were found along the edges and weed fields of the Great Peedee River in Darlington County, SC. Males were all along the rivers shady edges. I watched one grab a American Snout butterfly for a quick meal. The only female we found was this one that Bob Barber netted and held for this photo.

The Cocoa Clubtail at right was found in the Nueseway Nature Park in Kinston, NC (Lenior County) on May 3, 2002.
