Butterflies of the
Carolinas & Virginias

Nature Photographer

Ashy Clubtail,
Gomphus lividus

Size 2 inches.

Habitat: Rivers to small streams, ponds and lakes. Also along woodland edges and openings.

Flight Period: April - August

Similar Species: Lancet Clubtail. Also Dusky Clubtail in the northern states where both species are nearly identical.

Comments: This species usually forages on the ground or near it. When seen in flight they tend to fly up then down all the time in something like a U over and over very unmistakable. Tends to be slightly larger than Lancet Clubtail if you ask me.

The top photo was taken in Durham County, NC on April 27, 2001 and the center photo was taken in Bladen County, NC on May 04, 2001 in Eno River State Park. The bottom photo was taken in Caswell County, NC on April 28, 2001 in the Caswell Gamelands.
