This was my first trip to California,
and I enjoyed it no question. My girlfriend and I were visiting her
sister in Mono Hot Springs. We visited another Friend in San Francisco
before driving a rental car to Mono Hot Springs. Given we were visiting
we didn't get out everyday to check new places so the list is limited
but very good for a first timer from the eastern US.
Mono Hot Springs (elevation 6650 foot) is up in Sierra National Forest
northeast of Fresno California on 168 which is a dead end road that ends
at Thomas A Edison Lake elevation 7700 foot. Along the way up there you
pass Shaver Lake (elevation around 5000 foot), then Huntington Lake (elevation
around 6500 foot), Kaiser Pass (elevation about 7800 foot) then you drop
down to the South Fork of the San Joaquin River to the hot springs. We
also checked out the San Joaquin River below Millerton Lake (elevation
around 500 foot) which was very hot over 100 degrees compared to the 80s
we saw in the mountains.
