Size: Wingspan is 2 1/2 to 3 inches.

Similar Species:
Monarch

Queen

Habitat: Open areas near waterways or streams. Usually found around willows.

Abundance: Common in the eastern parts of the state and becomes uncommon to rare toward the mountains.

Flight Period: Flies from late April until early November.

Comments: The Viceroy mimics the Monarch butterfly for protection from predators.

The top two photos were taken at the Green Bottoms Wildlife Management Area in Cabell Co., WV on August 13, 2005. The third photo was taken in Macon Co., NC on May 13, 2006 which is in the NC mountains where Viceroys are rare. The bottom photo was taken in Hamilton Co., OH on August 28, 2002.
