Variegated Fritillary,
Euptoieta claudia

New Variegated Fritillary page

Size: Wingspan is 1 3/4 to 2 5/8 inches.

Similar Species:
None, can be mistaken for American Lady in flight.

Habitat: Disturbed fields, roadsides, cultivated areas, gardens, woodland edges and dunes.

Abundance: Common in the coastal plain and fairly common in the piedmont

Flight Period: Flies from mid April until December. Most abundance starting in June.

Comments: I found these Variegated Fritillaries on June 23, 2000 at the Carolina Pavilion Butterfly House as getting good field photos can prove very difficult to do. The second photo was taken at the Flat River Impoundment in Durham Co., NC on September 09, 2006

You can see the much larger and slightly different female in these mated photos.
