Butterfly Trip to Southern Florida
Day 1, January 23, 2002
|
Roger Rittmaster and I arrived in Miami Florida on Wednesday January 23, 2002 about 10 AM and spent later half of the day in the Everglades at Royal Palm Hammock and Long Pine Key. Our first stop landed a lifer skipper for both of us 4 Monk Skippers, mostly worn and very hard to ID from Glassberg`s Florida butterfly book. Then a Twin-spotted Skipper another good find. We then checked out the Anhinga Trail at Royal Palm Hammock which was crowded with people and lots of Anhinga and wading birds. Ocola Skippers were everywhere in the Spanish Needles patches. Out in the marsh we spotted a Palatka Skipper on Pickerelweed. Next we braved the mangrove trail and saw several Great Southern Whites fly by, one sure looked like a Florida White, but who could really say from an in flight look. After leaving Royal Palm Hammock we drove to Long Pine Hammock and stopped on the roadside to check out a large white flying by. Roger spotted our first Florida Duskywing and we both took photos. We decided to try the trail to the left just before the campground and found it alive with butterflies catching the last of the suns rays on the trees along the trail. Roger managed to sneak in a Baracoa Skipper photo a lifer for both of us! Here`s our list: ( I believe this is Miami-Dade County?) On to Day 2 (Florida Keys)
