Size: Wingspan is 1 5/8 to 1 7/8 inches.

Similar Species: None

Habitat: Open woodlands with hackberries and thickets.

Abundance: Fairly common in the coastal plain and eastern piedmont. Less common to rare elsewhere in North Carolina.

Flight Period: Primarily from early March until late August. Over winters as an adult and can be found in winter during warming spells.

Comments: The above American Snout was found in Richmond Co., NC section of the Sandhills Gamelands on March 8, 2002. The snout on right was found in the deep woods along a creek at Raven Rock State Park on March 18, 1999.
