Seminole Crescent, Phyciodes texana seminole

Size: Wingspan is 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches.

Similar Species: None in the Carolinas

Habitat: Swampy woods along rivers and streams.In South Carolina check along the swamps near the Conagree, Santee and Wateree Rivers.

Abundance: Very rare in North Carolina, uncommon in South Carolina.

Flight Period: From April until late October.

Comments: On October 27, 2002 I found the first recorded Seminole Crescent in 15 years near the Waccamaw River in Columbus County NC, the last report was in Brunswick County NC back in September of 1987.

Both photos were taken in Calhoun Co., SC on October 26, 2002.
