Northern Pearly-Eye, Size: Wingspan is 1 5/8 to 2 1/8 inches. Similar Species:
Habitat: Rich hardwood forests near streams or wet areas. Along trails and dirt roads in or along hardwood forests. Abundance: Uncommon but wide spread in the mountains and a bit harder to find in the piedmont. Flight Period: Flies from mid May until mid September. Comments: Notice the antennal club on Northern Pearly-Eyes always have black before the tip and a pale tip. Where as Southern Pearly-Eyes have completely orangish antennal clubs. The above Northern Pearly-Eye I found on May 31, 2000 in my yard in Orange County on a tree that was leaking sap. The one at right was found in the Caswell Gamelands on June 04, 2000 we had a state all time high count of 23 Northern Pearly-eyes!
