Creole Pearly-Eye,
Enodia creola

Size: Wingspan is 1 5/8 to 2 1/8 inches.

Similar Species:
Southern Pearly-Eye

Northern Pearly-Eye

Habitat: Bottomlands in shady areas with Cane nearby. Partly shaded trails or roads along bay forests or wet maritime forests.

Abundance: Uncommon in the sandhills and northern coastal plain and rare in the southern and central piedmont.

Flight Period: Flies from mid April until early June, early July until mid September.

Comments: Creole Pearly-eyes have 5 spots on the forewing, but most of the time one of the spots is hidden by the hindwing. You`ll notice on the photo at top the second spot is absent altogether The photo at right barely shows the fifth spot. See the knuckles of a closed fist in the forewing post median line that`s the best way to tell the creole from southern or northern pearly-eyes.

These photos were taken in Weymouth Woods Nature Preserve in Moore Co., NC on June 05, 2004.
