Nature Photographer
Randy L Emmitt

Harvester,
Feniseca tarquinius

Size:
Wingspan is 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches.

Similar Species:
American Copper

Habitat:
Partly shaded areas near waterways, ponds or lakes. Usually found near adlers thickets with wooly aphids.

Abundance:
Found through out North Carolina, but rare or overlooked because of it`s small size and the way it blends into the landscape as shown in the photo at right.

Flight Period:
Flies from mid March until October.

Comments:
I found this Harvester on the Giles County, Virginia 4th of July Butterfly Count along the New River on July 02, 2000. The spot where I found it, fishermen were putting in and taking out canoes as I photographed it. It didn't seem to care at all about all the people and canoes going down the trail.

The photo at right was taken in the Caswell Gamelands in Caswell County, NC on April 27, 2001. It was perched above me so getting a full open winged shot was impossible.
