Great Purple Hairstreak,
Atlides halesus

Size: Wingspan is 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches.

Similar Species:
No other hairstreaks even close in North Carolina.

Habitat: Moist hardwood forests, bottomlands and swamps. Trees having Mistletoe nearby as it`s the host plant.

Abundance: Uncommon in the coastal plain and rare in the piedmont.

Flight Period: Late March until mid October.

Comments: Both photos of this Great Purple Hairstreak was taken in summer on August 6, 2002 in my Orange Co., NC garden on Applemint.
