Great Spangled Fritillary,
Speyeria cybele




Size: Wingspan is 2 1/8 to 3 inches.

Similar Species:
Aphrodite Fritillary

Atlantis Fritillary both of these species are usually found at higher elevations.

Habitat: Open fields, meadows, gardens mostly moist areas with rich soil.

Abundance: Very common in the mountains and common in the piedmont. Becomes uncommon just south of Durham, NC.

Flight Period: Flies from mid May until mid October.

The top photo was taken in Durham Co., NC on August 18, 2002. The center and bottom photos were taken in Floyd Co., VA on July 04, 2003.
