Great Spangled Fritillary, Size: Wingspan is 2 1/8 to 3 inches. Similar Species:
Habitat: Open fields, meadows, gardens mostly moist areas with rich soil. Abundance: Very common in the mountains and common in the piedmont. Becomes uncommon just south of Durham, NC. Flight Period: Flies from mid May until mid October. Comments: Caterpillar shown below
