Size: Wingspan is 2 to 2 1/2 inches.

Similar Species:
Tawny Emperor

Habitat: Found near hackberries, bottomlands near brown water.

Abundance: Common in most of the state.

Flight Period: 2 broods first mid May until late June and second from early July until early October.

Comments:
These photos are all of males, females seem very hard to find.

The top photo was taken in a school yard butterfly bush on in Radford City, VA on July 05, 2003. The second photo was taken in Eno River State Park at Fews Ford in Orange Co., NC on May 16, 2004. The bottom photo was taken in Butler Co., OH at Gilmore Ponds Nature Preserve on August 28, 2002.
