New Henry's Elfin
stock photos from NC and VA.

Size: Wingspan is 7/8 to 1 1/8 inch.

Similar Species:
Brown Elfin

Frosted Elfin

Habitat: Woodlands, woodland edges, bog edges and powerline cuts.

Abundance: Uncommon to fairly common in the eastern piedmont and the coastal plain.

Flight Period: Early March until late April.

Comments: The top Henry`s Elfin was found on March 28, 1999. Thanks to Will Cook for finding it. We were on the north side of Raven Rock State Park along the powerline cut. Look for early blooming blueberry and redbud trees to find it nectaring. The host plant is American Holly, Ilex opaca.

The Henry's Elfin above right was found in my yard in Orange County on March 18, 2000 it was defending territory.

The Henry`s at right was found in Carteret County at the Neuse River Park (Croatan National Forest) on April 8, 2000. There`s supposed to be a green race along coastal NC this was about 15- 20 miles inland and it doesn't appear to be a green one.
