Silvery Blue,
Glaucopsyche lygdamus

Size: Wingspan is 1 to 1 1/4 inch.

Similar Species: None in our area. Reakirt`s Blue up north.

Habitat: In our western mountains of North Carolina only along wooded roadsides and trails in hardwood forests. Also cove forest or dry forests where it`s hosts plants Carolina Vetch (Vicia caroliniana) and sometimes Crown Vetch (Coronilla varia) grow.

Abundance: Rare or uncommon always found near it`s host plants

Flight Period: Flies from mid April until mid May.

Comments: The top Silvery Blue was found in Graham County on May 01, 2000 it was nectaring on Johnny Jump-ups planted by the highway department. The middle blue was found along a feeder creek to a lake in Macon County on May 02, 2000.

The Silvery Blue at right was found on it`s host plant Carolina Vetch (Vicia caroliniana) in Macon County on May 02, 2000. This one was found along a very dry road with small amounts of Carolina Vetch growing here and there on the upper portion of a slope.
