Size: Wingspan is 3/4 to 1 1/8 inch.

Similar Species:
Spring Azure

Eastern-tailed Blue

Appalachian Azure

Habitat: Open areas, power line cuts, disturbed areas and grassy fields in North Carolina.

Abundance: Common in most of NC.

Flight Period: Flies from early May until late September.

Comments: The Summer Azure is usually found after the Spring Azure is finished. Also the Summer Azure is the palest of the azures. White Clover seems to be a favorite nectar source.

Very unusual to see any azures with their wings open like this! I found this female in my yard after it rained all day on May 28, 2001.

There is also a "spring form" Summer Azure that can be found in late March and April, it looks very much like the Spring Azure.

The top and bottom photos were taken in Eno River State Park in Orange Co., NC on May 26, 2005.
