Holly Spring Azure,
Celastrina idella

Size: Wingspan is 7/8 to 1 1/4 inch.

Similar Species: Edwards Spring Azure, Summer Spring Azure, Eastern-tailed Blue, Appalachian Blue.

Habitat: Woodlands, wetlands, pocosins and maritime forests. Only found in the presence of hollies in or around swamps in North Carolina.

Abundance: Common in the coastal plains.

Flight Period: Flies from early March until early May.

Comments: These Holly Spring Azures were found in Bladen County on April 02, 1999. Just about anywhere you found open damp dirt or sand you could find them puddling.

The main difference in the Holly versa the Edwards Azure is that it`s about 1/8 inch larger. If you look the spots they all seem close to the same.
