Butterflies of the
Carolinas & Virginias

Nature Photographer
Randy L Emmitt
American Lady,
Vanessa virginiensis

Size: Wingspan is 1 3/4 to 2 1/8 inches.

Similar Species:
Painted Lady

Habitat: Fields, meadows, roadsides and gardens.

Abundance: Common in most of the Carolinas.

Flight Period: Flies from mid March until November.

Comments: The American lady is easily found in gardens and is a favorite to many butterfliers. The old common name American Painted Lady isn't used any more. I think the old name adds to confusion with beginners.

The top photo was taken at Occoneechee State Preserve on May 15, 2001 it was freshly emerged. The photo at right is from my garden in Orange County, NC its on Verbena Bonariensis.

Notice the 2 eye spots on the hindwing one
larger than the other. The Painted Lady has
4 small eye spots
