Gemmed Satyr,
Cyllopsis gemma

Size: Wingspan is 1 1/4 to 1 5/8 inches.

Similar Species:
Carolina Satyr

Habitat: Hardwood forests along trails or roads in partial shade. Sometimes found in grassy pinewoods.

Abundance: Fairly common in the piedmont uncommon in the coastal plain and rare in the mountains.

Flight Period: Flies from late March until early October. There are three broods so there will be some gaps during it`s flight period.

Comments: This Gemmed Satyr was a first county record in Jones County. I was along the edge of a grassy pinelands along a rich hardwoods forest in Croatan NF on April 22, 2000

I`ve tried for nearly 3 years to get a close up like this one. This one allowed many flash shots of the top photo.
