American Avocets (winter plumage)
These photos were taken on New Years Eve 2000 at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina`s Outer Banks. It seemed to be about 10 below zero wind chill factor and very windy, thus the above photo did not make it full size in my database. Altogether there must have been about 20 of these American Avocets at North Pond right along the road. This is the only reliable place in North Carolina to see this species of shorebird.
