Patent-leather Beetle
(Odontotaenius disjunctus)

Family: Passalidae

They survive by eating decaying wood. The larvae feeds on prechewed wood by the adults. This beetle has many common names including Bess Beetle and Peg Beetle. Note this one has a small reddish brown parasitic bug crawling on it`s side.

This beetle was found inside some firewood I was splitting on January 29, 2000 in Orange County, NC.
